In addition to a fascinating golf story written with accuracy, humor and imagination, it was a joy to visualize the English landscape through the eye of a portrait artist. I read Mr Ryder's Trophy in one day. I couldn't stop.

Paul and the Mosaic Law
Published in Paperback by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. (January, 2001)
Authors: Durham-Tubingen Research Symposium on Earliest Christianity and Judais and James D. G. Dunn
Average review score:

Excellent introduction to the topic
A compilation of for the most part excellent articles dealing with the topic, the Apostle Paul and the Mosaic Law. Some of the articles are not for the novice and presume some knowledge of biblical Greek. However, the book does provide a good introduction to what James Dunn refers to as, "the new perspective on Paul." This school of thought is making good headway in resolving longstanding tensions and apparent "contradictions" in Paul's treatment of the Jewish law versus justification by faith. Evangelicals in particular should be paying attention to such works though doing so necessitates reexamining certain presuppositions of Reformed theology, especially those relating to first century Palestinian Judaism. I recommend this to anyone wishing to explore this topic.

PURITAN BOOKSHELF CD (Volume Five) Various Reformation Authors (Brown of Wamphray, M'Ward, Durham, Vines, et al.)
Published in CD-ROM by Still Waters Revival Books (03 April, 2001)
Authors: Vines, Brown of Wamphray, M'Ward Durham and other Puritan & Reformed authors
Average review score:

The Reformers Speak
If you're interested in reformed theology, the Puritan Bookshelf CDs are a great way to get an extensive library of books, lectures and sermons, for very little expense - and without having to search the world for them in libraries and used book stores. Every CD is packed with a wealth of wisdom and biblical instruction seldom seen in our day.

This particular CD contains fifty-four works by Reformation authors of the 16th and 17th centuries, as well as several by contemporary covenanters.

"The Poor Man's Cup of Cold Water," by Robert M'Ward, is a real blessing to read. No mere platitudes and pat phrases, this epistle truly was a cup of cold water, ministered to the suffering saints in Scotland, who were in the midst of the fiery trial of persecution during the terrifying and tragic "killing times." Its timeless message is equally comforting and challenging today, for someone who is suffering for the Lord.

John Brown of Wamphray's book, "The History of the Indulgence," is especially enlightening. The author shows not only its history, but how it is contrary to the teaching of the scriptures, how it violates biblical church government, and how it hurts Christ, His Church, and the furtherance of His kingdom.

A very interesting piece of history is, "The Form and Order of the Coronation of Charles the Second, King of Scotland, England, France and Ireland: as it was acted and done at Scoone, the first day of Jan., 1651," by Robert Douglas. This small, illustrated book takes the reader right into the actual coronation ceremony, and includes the sermon preached on that occasion, by Mr. Douglas.

John Howe's book, "Of Charity in Reference to Other Men's Sins," is a sober reminder that as we seek to walk in the truth, so we are not to rejoice in iniquity - our own or others'. In the author's words, "Not to palliate the sins of any, but recover sinners. God grant we may use it more, to this purpose (when the case so requires) and need it less."

How does the believer live in a world of unbelievers? Whether in marriage, with neighbours, or in school or business, this is something that affects all of us as Christians. Peter Martyr gives solid biblical counsel in "A Treatise of the Co-Habitation of the Faithful with the Unfaithful."

This is only a glimpse of what is available on these wonderful CDs. I can't recommend them highly enough, to anyone who wants to study Protestant Church History from those who were there.

Not all of the books on this CD are listed in the description here. You can see the full listing for this individual CD (or the entire 32 CD set) online. SWRB also lists a similar set of 30 CDs in their Reformation Bookshelf CD series.

Syria and the New World Order (Durham Middle East Monographs Series)
Published in Hardcover by Ithaca (September, 1999)
Author: Neil Quilliam
Average review score:

Syria and the New World Order
In his book, Syria and the New World Order, Dr Quilliam offers a brilliant anaylsis of Syrian foreign policy using theories of international relations and political economy. He examines dometic, regional, and international factors as determinants of Syrian foreign policy, which, according to his anaylsis, is driven by realism. Using an 'omnibalancing model', he argues that Syria has been consistent in its search for a comprehensive settlement to the Arab-Israeli conflict. He presents Syria's role in the Second Gulf War, and the peace process (of which he provides a succinct account until 1997) as two examples of Syria's adjustment to the changes in the international arena since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the advent of the New World Order. The author's contribution lies in his sound understanding of theories of international relations which he applies skillfuly to the Syrian case in order to prove his argument.

Young Men Surviving Child Sexual Abuse : Research Stories and Lessons for Therapeutic Practice
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (May, 2003)
Author: Andrew Durham
Average review score:

Young men surviving child sexual abuse
Andrew Durham made his PhD in Applied Social Studies from the University of Warwick and with more than 20 years of experience in working with children and adolescents the likely candidate as author for this book. The book is published as a partnership between Wiley and NSPCC, the United Kingdom National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, in a book series that explores current issues relating to the prevention of child abuse and child protection.
This book is about the lives of Justin (22 years), Paul (23), Colin (18), Liam (22), Sean (21), David (15) and Ryan (15), all sexually abused in their adolescence by their headmaster, strangers, teacher or the local computer club man called Harry. The victims and perpetrators all male. It is hoped that Wiley and NSPCC will find an author to write the book on the child male victim and the female perpetrator.
The life story method of data collection is used in order to analyse and understand the impact of the child sexual abuse on each of these seven boys. This is a book about relationships, where a trust has been broken between an adult, usually in a power position, and a child in his care. This is a serious harm that will stay with these children for the rest of their lives and Andrew Durham has managed to describe their struggle for survival, the framework for therapy and assistance in recovery with seven case-examples.
An important book for the professional working with children or adolescents, who has experienced child sexual abuse.

The New High-Tech Manager: Six Rules for Success in Changing Times (Artech House Technology Management and Professional Development Library)
Published in Hardcover by Artech House (April, 1997)
Authors: Kenneth Durham and Bruce Kennedy
Average review score:

Hi-Tech schmi-tech, I'm in investment banking and I use it.
There is nothing more difficult or sensitive in my business than decision making. The chapter on the "decision tree" alone, has made me a few million dollars. I would say that's a pretty good deal, and it had nothing to do with high technology.

I am requesting our management make this a mandatory read...
There are truths here which should not be held simply within the management circle. Every aspiring technician should begin with this material. Its in-sight is practicle and easy to apply. Similar to some of the other readers, I keep it close by as a reference.

I purchased a copy after hearing a friend refer to it.
My company was growing and we were experiencing some real challenges. I was confiding in a friend, a few of the problems we were experiencing, and he started quoting from one of the author's books. I purchased a copy of The New High Tech manager, and it's been by my side ever since.
